Jeziornica rdestnicowa Macroplea appendiculata

Counting down, just 1 hour to go to the Great Southern Bioblitz

Hi everybody, just thought I would throw out a reminder that ALL forms of life count towards the Bioblitz tally. Here are a few tips to help economize on your time and make the most of your observations.

Birds and frogs do not need photographs. A simple recording of the sound is enough to identify most species. Try to record sounds that are clear and obvious without too much background disturbance. It is certainly a lot quicker than trying to chase the wildlife down for a picture...

Taking Photos to Aid Rubus Identification

When photographing Rubus it is helpful if you take shots of the leaves, the underside of the leaves, a close-up of the stem and, if available, shots of the flowers and fruits. These all help towards achieving a positive identification. Enjoy recording Rubus and posting your photographs on this project to help build a picture of the distribution of the various species !!

References:

There are not many popular references for snails in southern Africa.
The two most exciting terrestrial ones are:

  • DG Herbert 2010 The introduced terrestrial Mollusca of South Africa. SANBI Biodiversity Series 15
  • D Herbert & D Kilburn 2004 Field guide to the land snails and slugs of eastern South Africa. Natal Museum Pietermaritzburg

sadly there is nothing for the western half of the subcontinent, or for tropical southern Africa.

Bold black-and-white in females of the sable antelope (Hippotragus niger): anti-predator warning or maternal emulation of masculinity?

For naturalists, a central puzzle of the sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) is why its females combine

  • thoroughly conspicuous colouration (on face as well as rest of figure) with
  • lethal-looking horns (sharp-pointed, and straight enough to be deployed forwards, but curved enough to be deployed against a predator on its back).

14-15 November trip to Orange

I went to Orange to attend the November 2023 Future Orchards Spring Series - Orange. On the way back, I took detours through Spring Creek, Spring Hill, Millthorpe, Windradyne, Bathurst, Lithgow, Katoomba and Lawson to see if I can help collect even more thrips.

Hello everyone!

Are you wondering why you still haven't received my notification to tell you that your package arrived?
The reason is simple: there are too many of them! I received a ton of package and it takes some times to open them all, find an easily readable label and send the notification. So, please wait for a little longer!

Here's the amount of packages I received as of today:

Unfortunately, some of them ...

Wildflowers planted!

Folks in the Los Altos Library watched through the windows as volunteers planted wildflower seeds on the edge of the Heritage Orchard. When it was first planted with Blenheim apricot trees in 1901, this site was surrounded by meadows with resilient native species. We keep alive the stories of the past by inviting back the natives to live alongside the travelers who have spread their seeds so widely, encouraged by agricultural practices. Our goal is to increase biodiversity in this worki...

Happy 10th iNat Anniversary to Me!

Ten years ago tonight, after arriving home from attending a meeting of the El Camino Real Texas Master Naturalist, I entered my first iNat observation. I think the speaker at the program was Jonah Evans of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. He mentioned the use of iNat, a website I had investigated a couple of weeks earlier upon the suggestion of my sister.
After that night, I have classified myself as an iNat additct.
The iNaturalist community is awesome!

Where there's a sedge, there's often confusion -- Anon.

As mentioned in the Project summary, Carex is the largest genus in California where around 200 species occur, and one of the largest genera in the world with over 2,000 species. Due to the minor morphological differences between the species, it is often difficult to identify to species by sight. Source:
